My name is David John Thomas. I was born in 1951 in Flixton, Manchester and apart from 5 years living in Carrington between the ages of 6 and 11 have lived there all my l life. I was married to Helen Whittaker from 1972 until 2006 and we have two children: Alice, born in 1978; and Joseph, born in 1981. I have a brother, Michael, who was born in Flixton in 1956 and still lives in Flixton with his family.

My objective in developing this site was to publish details of my family tree - an ongoing quest for many of us I am sure, here are a few details:

My paternal great grandfather Robert Thomas was born in 1850 and in 1861 was living with his mother who was a widow and his Uncle who owned Pentre Farm, Treflach, Oswestry, Township Of Treflach. He moved to the Flixton area during the construction of the Manchester Ship Canal to work as a Train Driver. He died on 14th November 1894.

My grandfather Edward Thomas who had 9 siblings was born in Salford on 65th March 1889. After the family moved to Morris Grove, Flixton he married my grandmother, Alice Foster who was working 'in-service' in the village; her family originated from Yorkshire. They separated before I was born and he went to live in Chorlton-cum-Hardy as a lodger later to take up a relationship with the landlady's daughter, Cissie, with whom he spent the rest of his life.

My father Donald Thomas was born in Morris Grove, Flixton on 4th March 1921 and worked in Holdsworth's family butchers in the village. He met my mother Minnie Hughes (whose family originated from West Bromwich) in 1945 whilst convalescing from Malaria he had contracted in Burma during WWII. They were married in Flixton and lived there all their lives. Dad died far too early in his life from Prostate Cancer aged 74 in 1995. Mum died in October 2009 aged 84 from heart failure.

If you would like a copy of my family data file which is a full graphical tree showing every relative please mail me . . . . mailto:dave@barnfield.org
